Why Replace Your Door Seal?
A worn or damaged door weatherstrip seal can cause multiple problems: water leaks into the cabin, increased road noise, wind whistling at speed, and even reduced heating efficiency in winter. Replacing a door seal is one of the easiest DIY car maintenance tasks you can do.
Tools You'll Need
- New weatherstrip seal (check our catalogue for your specific vehicle)
- Plastic trim removal tool
- Isopropyl alcohol or silicone remover
- Clean microfibre cloths
- Adhesive promoter (optional)
Step-by-Step Installation
Step 1: Remove the Old Seal Start at one corner of the door aperture and gently peel the old seal away. Most seals are held by a combination of clips and friction fit. Use a plastic trim tool to avoid scratching the paintwork.
Step 2: Clean the Surface Thoroughly clean the mounting surface with isopropyl alcohol. Remove any old adhesive residue, dirt, and oil. The surface must be completely clean and dry before fitting the new seal.
Step 3: Fit the New Seal Starting at the top corner of the door frame, press the new seal into position. Work your way around the door aperture, ensuring the seal sits flush against the mounting surface. Press firmly at each clip point.
Step 4: Test the Fit Close the door and check for even compression around the entire seal. The door should close with a satisfying 'thud' without excessive resistance.
Tips for a Perfect Fit
- Always work in temperatures above 10°C for best rubber flexibility
- Don't stretch the seal during installation
- Allow 24 hours before washing the car
- Apply silicone lubricant to extend seal life
